What if you made society full of beautiful people? Would it not be good enough? I just finished UGLIES, by Scott Westerfeld. He writes about everyday kids, all kids. But, when they turn 16, everybody has to become supermodel gorgeous. Unless you'd rather risk life on the "outside". Uglies continues in the sequels of Pretties, and then Specials. It's entertaining and captivating.
One of my favorite recent reads is THOSE WHO SAVE US by Jenna Blum. It is the story of Trudy, a history professor collecting oral histories from both German and Jewish survivors of WWII and her mother, a native of Germany who left Germany as the new bride of an American soldier. It is a story of betrayal, survival, and secrecy. In her research for histories of WWII survivors, Trudy uncovers secrets about her own life and that of her mother. One of the most intriguing stories I have read in a while.
